Setting up User Accounts and Installing Programs in Windows XP

Upon the migration to RiceNet 2, setting up user accounts in Windows XP became unusually difficult.  This document is intended for graduate students who have an Admin account on a particular computer to create other Admin accounts and to install programs on that same computer.  If nobody has an Admin account on the computer in your office, create a new ticket at help.rice.edu with the title "Need restoration of admin rights on my PC."

To create an Admin account

Log in as a local administrator
Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
     Double-click User Accounts
Click on the Advanced tab and then on the Advanced button
Under Local Users & Groups, click the Users folder
In the menu bar, click Action and select New User
Enter the new user name and password
Hit OK and exit out to the Control Panel
     Select User Accounts again
The new user should appear in the list
Select the new user and click Properties
     Select the Group Membership tab
     Click Other and select Administrators
     Click OK and exit out
     Restart your computer

The new (local) administrative account should be available at login.

In your day-to-day computing tasks, you should login to ADRICE.  Your ADRICE account should NOT be set as a local administrator.

To install/remove programs when logged in to ADRICE

Right click on the executable (or right click on the "uninstall" icon)
     Select Run As...
Click "The following user" and select your local admin account
Type in your password and click OK
