2012 Wolfe Lecture in Mathematics
Thursday April 12, 2012

Title: The determinant of the Laplacian in number theory
Abstract: The determinant of the Laplacian is an interesting invariant of a compact Riemannian manifold. I will review its definition and discuss three instances where, despite its transcendental definition, its values are of algebraic nature and carry information of number-theoretic importance. I'll explain an application in one case, due to myself and Calegari.
The Annual Wolfe Lectures are supported through a generous gift from the estate of Raquel A. Wolfe in loving memory of her husband, Dr. Alfred S. Wolfe, and his love for math which he instilled in both his children. |
