The geometry of mapping class groups and automorphism groups of
free groups

Mladen Bestvina (University of Utah)

In the last 15 or so years we have witnessed essentially the complete understanding of the large-scale geometry of mapping class groups, thanks to the work of Masur, Minsky, and others. There is a parallel theory for the outer automorphism group Out(F_n) of a free group F_n of rank n. It is not as far developed as the one it's modeled on, but there has been a lot of progress in the last 5 years. In the talk I will review the mapping class group theory and compare it with the current state of knowledge in the Out(F_n) world.
