Title: Parallels between moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces and locally symmetric spaces

Abstract: It is a classical theme to compare and contrast the moduli space of genus g Riemann surfaces with locally symmetric orbifolds. In this talk I will explain how this analogy works and why it is useful (and, I think, interesting.) I will also present some conjectures that arise from this way of thinking. I will try to make this talk accessible to beginning graduate students.

The Annual Wolfe Lectures are supported through a generous gift from the estate of Raquel A. Wolfe in loving memory of her husband, Dr. Alfred S. Wolfe, and his love for math which he instilled in both his children.
