Fellows of the AMS - 7 of our faculty members have been named to the initial class of Fellows of the AMS. Department receives $1.7 million NSF Grant - Thanks to a new $1.7 million NSF grant, the Math Department faculty team of Tim Cochran, David Damanik, Robert Hardt, Brendan Hassett and Mike Wolf will be creating a program to prepare our undergraduate majors for success in their graduate careers, and support the research of our graduate and postdoctoral scholars. Building on expertise gained from our VIGRE (Vertical Integration of Research and Education) program and using geometric problems as a basis, the program will help develop the writing and analytical skills necessary for our students to excel after graduation. 50 years at Rice - This fall Professor Frank Jones celebrated the completion of 50 years on our faculty. At a gathering of friends, former students and colleagues, he was presented with a commemorative plaque honoring his many contributions to our department and to Rice University. Summer 2012


Emerging Scholars - As a faculty co-director for Rice's Emerging Scholars Program (RESP), Professor Mike Wolf has spent part of his summer helping incoming freshmen with their transition to the challenging pace, depth and rigor of math, science and engineering courses at Rice. The 24 participating students take classes, work on study skills with student coaches, and have the opportunity to interact with Rice researchers during the 6-week summer program. Spring 2012

Professor David Damanik receives 2012 Simons Fellowship. With his award of a 2012 Simons Fellowship, Professor David Damanik will have more time to do research. This Simons Foundation program recognizes outstanding mathematicians by extending their academic leave to a full year so that they can focus on problems which require an extensive amount of time and effort.

Professor Danijela Damjanovic awarded NSF CAREER grant. As a young faculty member who exemplifies the role of teacher-scholar, Professor Danijela Damjanovic has been awarded a prestigious NSF CAREER grant. In addition to funding her continued research, the grant will allow her to develop graduate and undergraduate courses in the field of dynamical systems. She will also direct a special outreach seminar series for female high school students next Spring. From the Rice News ...

2012 AMS-AAAS Mass Media Fellow. To help bridge the gap between science and media, Evelyn Lamb (Rice PhD, 2012) will work at the Scientific American for 10 weeks this summer. She will be working with professionals to improve her media communication skills and to understand the process of turning events and ideas into news. From the Rice News . . .
