Department Graduate honored by President Obama - Math alumnus, Raymond Johnson (PhD, 1969) has been named by President Obama as one of 14 recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. The awards recognize the crucial role of mentoring in the academic and personal development of underrepresented students of science and engineering.
After 40 years as a mathematics professor at the University of Maryland, Dr. Johnson returned to the Department as a faculty member in 2009. He retired in 2014 but remains an adjunct professor. More from the Rice News
Professor Damanik's work mentioned in Fields Medal citation - Recent Porter Lecturer Artur Avila received a Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians at Seoul, based partly on work with Rice professor David Damanik:
"With his collaborators, he has made essential progress in many areas, including real and complex one-dimensional dynamics, spectral theory of the one-frequency Schrödinger operator, flat billiards and partially hyperbolic dynamics."
The International Mathematical Union list of 2014 awardees and brief citations are given here.
Two department members recommended for NSF Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowships - RTG Lovett instructor John Calabrese and May 2015 graduate David Cohen have been recommended for the prestigious NSF postdoc research fellowships. These awards support future leaders in Mathematics by facilitating their participation in postdoctoral research environments that will have maximal impact on their future scientific development. John Calabrese proposed continuing his research in algebraic geometry at Rice with faculty member Brendan Hassett and David Cohen applied to the University of Chicago to work under the guidance of Danny Calegari.
December graduate now at MSRI - December 2014 grad Qiongling Li has kept busy after graduation. She is currently at MSRI as a postdoctoral fellow and has been offered a Caltech-QCM postdoc position to begin this Fall.
Professors Tim Cochran and Shelly Harvey receive 2014 Simons Fellowships - The Simons Foundation has announced that Professors Cochran and Harvey were awarded 2014 Simons Fellowships. This program recognizes outstanding mathematicians and supports research on complex problems requiring extended time and effort and will allow them to spend the 2014-15 year on sabbatical. Congratulations! More from the Rice News
