Tom VandenBoom wins Audience Choice Award
Representing our department in the Wiess School Homecoming presentations on Friday November 10, Tom VandenBoom was awarded the "Audience Choice Award" for favorite and most compelling talk by a young researcher, receiving the most votes from the audience who heard all the five-minute presentations. Even with strong research as a subject matter, a five minute mathematics presentation is a uniquely difficult challenge, so Tom's victory in an audience-approval competition is all the more impressive. Congratulations, Tom!
Department adds 2 new faculty members
We have added to our senior faculty when Alan Reid came onboard as the Edgar Odell Lovett Professor of Mathematics. His research interests include hyperbolic manifolds, discrete groups, low dimensional topology with a particular interest in connections to number theory and moduli spaces. Professor Reid had previously been at the University of Texas at Austin.
Gregory Chambers joined the department as our newest Assistant Professor. He received his PhD in 2014 from the University of Toronto under Alexander Nabutovsky and Regina Rotman and was an L. E. Dickson Instructor at the University of Chicago from 2014 - 2017. His interests include metric geometry, geometric analysis and discrete and combinatorial geometry.
2017 Evans Instructors
We hired 3 new G.C. Evans Instructors this Fall:
Gökalp Alpan, a graduate of Bilkent University in Turkey. His research includes orthogonal polynomials, potential theory, fractal geometry, and complex dynamics.
Siran Li, a graduate of the University of Oxford. His research interests include analysis and PDE, differential geometry, and fluid mechanics.
Selim Sukhtaiev, a graduate of the University of Missouri and whose research includes mathematical physics, partial differential equations, spectral theory, and infinite dimensional dynamical systems.
