2009 Graduate Student Awards Announced - Congratulations to Christopher Davis, winner of the Tracy Thomas Award, and Helge Krüger, winner of the Nettie S. Autry Fellowship. Current and previous winners of awards and fellowships are here.
2009 Hubert E. Bray Prize in mathematics was awarded to Chris Fraser. This award is given annually to the outstanding junior mathematics major. The Bray Prize webpage is here and previous winners are here.
Scholarship recipient Jennifer Trejo (2010 graduate) started her career as a customer accounts manager but thanks to the Leo M. Acker Memorial Scholarship she's now a math major in our department. More on her story here.

NSF Fellowship - Peter Horn, who graduated this May, received a prestigious (and rare) National Science Foundation Fellowship to continue his research in topology and knot theory at Columbia University. An article from the Rice News is here.
Master's Thesis Award - We are happy to announce that one of our graduate students, Helge Krueger, has received the honor of having the best Master's Thesis or Diplom in Mathematics in Austria for the year. Houston Marathon - Graduate student Colin Carroll placed 11th in the 2009 Houston Marathon with a time of 2:30:26 - the fastest time of any local competitor. An article from the Rice News is here and the Rice Thresher has an article here.
2007 Professor of the Year Frank Jones gets a surprise Birthday Party from his students.
Fermat's Last Theorem - Sir Andrew Wiles, the first person to prove Fermat's Last Theorem, presented a wonderful Presidential Lecture entitled "The Story of an Equation" at Rice on November 11. We were privileged to have some time with him during a Departmental Tea that afternoon.

Summer Workshop for Young Women - This summer we hosted the Rice University Mathematical Institute for Young Women sponsored by NSF and organized by Dr. Shelly Harvey. This is the first year of a 5-year commitment to hold the Institute to encourage young women to consider a career in mathematics. A full article is available on the Rice new site here.

NSF CAREER Grant - Shelly Harvey, assistant professor of mathematics has won one of only 8 CAREER grants awarded by NSF in the field of core mathematics. The full article on the Rice News is here.
Professor of the Year - Frank Jones was named
2007 Texas Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). An article which appeared in the Rice News is here.
