TOPOLOGY SEMINAR: Concordance and homology cobordism in the rational world
by Tim Cochran (Rice) in HB 427
(joint work with Bridget Franklin and Peter Horn) If two knots in 3-space are concordant then their zero-framed surgery manifolds are homology cobordant closed 3-manifolds. The converse is a long-standing open question. Both concordance and homology cobordism can be, and have been, generalized and studied "over the rationals". We show that the corresponding open question in the rational world has a negative answer. Host Department: Rice University-Mathematics Submitted by cochran@rice.edu |
