Teaching Seminar: Teaching Undergraduate Mathematics through Writing, Talk, and Movement
by
Natasha Artemeva (Carleton University, Canada) in HB 227
This presentation discusses preliminary results of a large-scale project that investigates how mathematics is taught through writing, talk, and movement in undergraduate classrooms around the world (Artemeva & Fox, 2010). The presentation demonstrates that mathematics lectures are characterized by repeating typified actions and patterns of language use and movement, which override cultural, national, and linguistic differences. These findings suggest that the disciplinary use of linguistic and physical resources cannot be separated from the content of the mathematics lecture. The study has important implications for training graduate students, postdocs, and new mathematics faculty. Host Department: Rice University-Mathematics Submitted by evanmb@gmail.com |
