Fall 2009
Math 101: Section 003
Announcements:
- 11/30 - One more sample final has been added under the Exams section below. Another sample will come later today. All problems on all the sample finals are fair game as well as all problems from old exams. (Previously the practice finals listed had problems to skip. This was a copying error.)
- 11/25 - Sample finals have been added under the "Exams" section. Please use these and start studying for the final as soon as possible! (Actually DO the problems, don't just look at them.) Secondly, it occured to me that OwlSpace does not tell you what the grade cutoffs are. Currently, here are the grade cutoffs with respect to the curves I've placed on each of the two midterms: Previously listed grade cutoffs NO LONGER apply. To see your grade, consult esther. If you have questions, email me.
- 11/23 - The bonus
assignment
has
been added to the course webpage. It will be due on Monday November
30th in class. (There is no other homework assignment due this day.) It
is worth a possible of 15 points and these points will be added (in
effect) to your total for Exam 2. I have a few updates on the final
exam and course grading you may find interesting:
- Instead of three, I have decided to drop your lowest FIVE homework scores. (This is not a change you will be able to see on OwlSpace, however.)
- If you do better on the Final Exam than on either Exam 1 or 2, then there is a potential for this final exam to replace the score for that exam as well. So in effect, the final could be worth as much as 60 - 65% of your final grade, if you do well. Do not get overly anxious, however. If you do not do as well on the final, then your grade will be calculated as the grading rubric states on the syllabus. Your grade will be entered in which ever way works out best for you.
- The course grades which you see in OwlSpace have not been altered to reflect the curve on Exam 2. Do not believe them. These should be corrected by the end of the week.
- Your final will exam will be approximately half cumulative and half material covered since Exam 2 (Chapters 5 and 6).
- 11/10 - As always, you
should check OwlSpace to ensure that your
homework scores have been uploaded correctly. However, I'd like you to
especially check these last few assignments. Since I received so many
assignments back from the grader at once, I have less-than-average
faith that everything was entered correctly. So please double check and
if you find inconsistencies, please email me as soon as possible.
I expect to have your exams graded and returned by Monday. Solutions to the exam will be uploaded to the website (probably tomorrow afternoon) after all exams have been completed. - 11/7 - This morning, the
other Math 101 instructors and I finished writing Midterm Exam 2. We
decided not to include sections 5.1 and 5.2. Therefore, this exam will
only emphasize sections 3.4 - 4.9. The reason for this is just that
there is already so much material to cover from these sections. With
this in mind, the due date for Homework 30 has been extended to
Wednesday 11/11, i.e. there is no homework due in class on Monday. In
class on Monday, I will finish giving a few quick examples which I was
unable to cover in class today from section 5.2 and answer any
questions you may have about material for the second midterm.
There is also another sample midterm posted on the class website (math.rice.edu/~bf2/math101.html).
I will be holding special office hours on Monday 11/9 from 2-4 pm for those of you with last minute exam questions. As usual, if you would like to meet with me at any point outside of these times, just shoot me an email. - 10/27 - Sample exams for
the
second midterm are uploaded below. Remember the second midterm will be
held on Tuesday November 10 at 8 am in Keck 100.
I have also uploaded a pdf file of my schedule here. If you would like to come and talk to me about something and cannot make my office hours, please use this schedule to find a time at which you could come talk to me. Then, send me an email and I will make a point to be in my office. - 10/9- Bonus assignment is located both here and below. It is due 10/14 in class.
- 10/6 - Sometime before
Friday (hopefully tomorrow), I will be uploading your midterm grades
into Esther. These grades will not be
exactly what is shown under your grade reports on Esther since I will
probably not use the 90A, 80B ... standard cutoffs when I finalize
grades at the end of the semester. Rather, I will give you a
grade based upon what I would give you were the class to have ended
after the first midterm. Use this as a guide and not as a
final sentencing.
Several of you have asked me for some sort of extra credit assignment to make up for the first midterm. I know many of you expected to do better and were disappointed in your grades. I've decided that I will give you a bonus assignment which you may do over fall break. The bonus assignment will be given on Friday and will be due in class on Wednesday October 14. It will be worth a total of fifteen points and will be pledged. Any points you obtain will be effectively added to your score on Exam 1. The assignment will be optional but difficult. Although you'll be able to use your book and notes, you may not consult the internet, or other people. This includes classmates, tutors, TAs, other professors, etc. - 9/22 - As a reminder the
first exam will be held on Thursday October 1st from 8 - 9:15 am.
If you have any conflicts with this exam time, please inform
me of these conflicts by this Thursday September 24th so that we can
make alternate arrangements. Make up exams will be given only
for documented reasons and you will be required to take the exam within
one day of the scheduled exam day.
On Wednesday September 30th in class, we will be focusing exclusively on review for the exam on Thursday. Please come to class prepared with any questions you might have. I will have notes prepared, but since I cannot predict exactly what you have had trouble on, use this as an opportunity to gain greater incite on the concepts you did not understand.
I will also be holding extra office hours on Wednesday September 30th from 1-3pm. Please come and see me if you have any extra questions. Remember, I also will have office hours this Friday and anytime by appointment. - 9/9 - Disability Support
Services needs a volunteer note taker in this class. If you
attend class regularly, have legible handwriting and take detailed
notes, you are fully qualified to be a note taker. If you
take comprehensive notes on a laptop, you are a good candidate for
being a note taker. If you are interested in helping out,
come up after class, and pick up a paper to return to Jean Ashmore,
Director of Disability Support Services in Room 111.
Disability services will make copies of your notes at no cost
to you. Volunteer Services of this nature can be listed on a
resume or job application, as employers are interested in people who
volunteer to communities.
Please think about this opportunity to help out a fellow classmate! - 8/28 - Homework solutions will now be posted on the Owlspace website after they are turned in. On the Owlspace page, look under resources.
- 8/26 - CLASS HAS MOVED: Beginning Friday 8/28, class sessions will now be held in HB 427 (as opposed to HB 453).
- 8/26 - My cell phone number is listed. In dire emergencies, you may feel free to visit me in my office outside of office hours. Just be sure to call first.
Recitations: Help sessions will be held by the Math 101 TA's Tuesdays and Thursdays, usually in HZ 212, though sometimes in BL 131 (9/15, 9/24, 10/1, 10/29, 11/5, 11/19). Your TA's are listed below.
- Zhi Zhang -- zhi.zhang@rice.edu
- Letao Zhang -- letao.zhang@rice.edu
- Derek Goto -- goto@rice.edu
- Paul Munger -- paul.e.munger@rice.edu
Syllabus: A (hopefully) current version of the syllabus should be found here.
