Text: Calculus Early Transcendentals, by James Stewart, 6th edition (with webassign). A
custom version with the chapters relevant for this course is available at the bookstore,
with the title Single Variable Calculus I&II.
Grades:
Your grade in the class will be based on the following weights:
Homework:
20%
Exam I:
20%
Exam II:
20%
Participation (and Attendance):
5%
Final Exam:
35%
Homework: Homework will be assigned twice a week and due Tuesday at 2pm and Friday at 4am online. The homework will be done via the computer using the WedAssign program. You can login at https://www.webassign.net/login.html . No time extensions on homework will be granted for requests made after the deadline.
I recommend having a separate notebook for writing complete solutions to homework
problems. Imagine that a fellow student will be reading your homework to study for an
exam. Homework is not pledged, and you may find it helpful to work with others to solve the
homework problems. Although you are free to get outside help on your homework, any attempt to falsify your grade is still in violation of the honor code.
Participation (and Attendance): My goal is to foster an interactive class environment. To this end you are required to
contribute by responding to questions, voicing confusion, discussing problems, and taking
part in group work. Students are expected to be considerate during class discussions. The
best way to achieve a high participation grade is to make your voice heard every class.
I expect students to attend every class and arrive on time. It is your responsibility to
keep informed of announcements made in class. Poor attendance affecting your ability to
participate regularly will also be considered when assigning participation grades.
Exams: There will be two exams during the semester and a final exam. The exams will be pledged and closed book. Calculators will not be allowed. The midterms will be held in class. The exams will be February 16th and March 30th.
Final Exams: It is the policy of the mathematics department that no final may be given early to accommodate student travel plans. We will not know when the final in this course will be scheduled for some time. Therefore, if you should make plans to travel before the end of final exam period, and it turns out that the final for this course is after your scheduled departure date, you will have to choose between keeping your plans and receiving zero for the final, or incurring the costs for changing your plans and taking the final at its scheduled time. Thanks for your understanding.
Note: Any student with a documented disability requiring accommodations is requested to speak with me during the first week of class. All such discussions will remain confidential. Students with disabilities need to also contact Disability Support Services in Ley Student Center.
