Symmetries of algebraic varieties

We describe old and new work on the symmetries of polynomials and their zeroes. In particular we focus on two extreme cases. If the automorphism group is large, it is interesting to try to give explicit generators of the automorphism group. If the automorphism group is small, it is interesting to give uniform bounds on the order of the automorphism group.
