Math 499: VIGRE Seminar in Algebraic Geometry

W 12:00-12:50, Herman Brown 453

Algebraic geometry has a reputation for being an abstruse and difficult subject. The purpose of this seminar is to introduce undergraduates to the field through the systematic exploration of a limited number of concrete examples. While we cannot explain all the theory behind these examples, we can hope to offer some perspective on what algebraic geometry is about.

The exact syllabus of the class will depend on the background of the participants. However, consult the main VIGRE Computational Algebraic Geometry page

http://www.math.rice.edu/~hassett/vigre.html

for examples of what has been covered in past years.

Prerequisites: Multivariable calculus and linear algebra; taking abstract algebra concurrently would be useful but not essential

Credit hours: Sign up for one credit hour of Math 499 section 001. (Talk to me if you'd like more credit hours--this will involve a term paper.)

Participants Brendan Hassett and Bo Zhu
