MATH 499/MATH 699: VIGRE Junior Seminar, Computational Algebraic Geometry,Spring 2004
Time:
Wednesdays at noon. If this is a problem for anybody intrested please let me know.
Location:
Herman Brown, Room 453
Instructor:
- Rena Quandt
- Email: quandt@math.rice.edu
- Telephone: 713-348-2868 or Rice extension 2868
- Office: HB 447
Description:
This semester's seminar will be a continuation of the Algebraic Geometry
we learned in the fall: varieties, monomial orderings, Grobner bases, extension theory, projective space, etc.
We will focus more on projects this semester focusing on the use of Grobner bases. Attending last semester's
seminar is not a prerequisite.
Projects:
- March 10, Amanda Knecht,
- Finding Equations for Images of Curves Using Grobner Bases
- March 17, Harding Brumby,
- Methods of Implicitization
- March 31, April Goldman,
- Selection Strategies
- April 7, Bill Finkenkeller,
- Optimal Variable Orderings
- April 14, Luke Chuang,
- Grobner Bases and Cohomology
Textbook:
The material for the seminar will be from several
resources, but the book below will probably be the most useful for everyone to have a copy.
I do not plan on ordering them through the bookstore, so I would suggest buying
it through the internet.
- Ideals, Varieties, and Algorithms by Davis Cox, John Little, and Donal O'Shea.
Another good source for the seminar will be Brendan Hassett's Computational Algebraic Geometry Book
Grading policy:
The final grade for the one hour seminar will be based on in-class participation (40%) and
the project presentation (60%).
Special needs:
Any student with a documented disability needing academic
adjustments or accommodations is requested to speak with their
instructor
during the first two weeks of class. All discussions will
remain confidential. Students with disabilities will need to also
contact Disability Support Services in the Ley Student Center.
