Geometry and the complexity of matrix multiplication

Thursday September 15, 4:00PM, Herman Brown 227

Several problems from areas such as quantum computing, algebraic complexity theory and phylogenetics lead to questions about the geometry of objects called "secant varieties of Segre varieties" which are of interest in their own right. I will explain some of these questions and recent progress on them using differential and algebraic geometry.
