| To help count the squares, take square grid paper. Cut out a square that is 8 by 8, just like the checkerboard. Then cut out another square that is 7 by 7. Now slide the 7-by-7 square over the 8-by-8 square to help you see how many 7-by-7 squares that there are. See below how it is done.
Or do it online with JAVA.

Now cut a 6-by-6 square, and slide it over the 8-by-8 to help you count. Then try the 5-by-5, etc. Also, look for a pattern.
