 How Schools Shortchange Girls (1992)
|
The AAUW Report: How Schools Shortchange Girls
examined
how girls in grades K-12 received an inferior education to
boys in America's schools. Among other results, the report
- revealed that girls received less attention in the classroom than
boys;
- girls were not pursing math-related careers in
proportion to boys;
- although the gender gap in math was
shrinking, the gender gap in science was increasing;
- African
American girls were more likely than white girls to be
rebuffed by teachers;
- curricula
ignored or stereotyped women;
- reports of sexual harassment of
girls were increasing; and
- many standardized tests contained
elements of gender bias undermining
girls' self-esteem and discouraging them from
pursuing nontraditional courses
of study, such as math and science.
