- Congratulations to RUSMP's own Dr. Robin A. Ward, for the publication of her three-book series, Literature-Based Activities Integrating Mathematics with Other Content Areas, designed for teachers of grades K-2, grades 3-5, and grades 6-8.
- The Rice University Mathematics Leadership Institute (MLI) was featured in the Fall 2007 edition of Rice at Large. Thanks to MLI, the number of teachers with Texas Master Mathematics Teacher (8-12) Certification has increased by more than 50%. Rice at Large is a publication of the Office of Minority Community Affairs and the Office of the Associate Provost of Rice University.
- MLI's effect on the number of Master Mathematics teachers in Texas was also recognized by The Greentree Gazette, a bimonthly business magazine for higher education. The article, "Boosting Student Achievement in Math and Science," also notes that students of MLI teachers performed on a higher level on state and national standardized tests than students of other teachers. The article goes on to point out that this academic improvement is reflected across the board, with increases in both the number of students passing and the number of students achieving commended status.

Registration is now open for this year's
Spring Networking Conference, to be held at Duncan Hall on the Rice University campus.
The networking conference will feature Dr. Robin A. Ward, Associate Director for Curriculum Integration at RUSMP,
and Dr. Nita Copley, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Houston's College of Education.
See the schedule for specific times and topics.
See the map for directions and parking information. - Registration for the 2008 Summer Campus Program is now available online. Interested teachers may now sign up for the 22nd Annual RUSMP Summer Campus Program. The Summer Campus Program will again be held at Pin Oak Middle School, starting Monday, June 9, and ending on Wednesday, July 2.
- RUSMP's Dr. Jackie Sack had her manuscript "Commonplace Intersections within a High School Mathematics Leadership Institute" accepted for publication in the Journal of Teacher Education. In addition, Dr. Sack also had a manuscript accepted for inclusion in the NCTM's 71st Yearbook, Understanding Geometry for a Changing World, to be published in 2009.
- RUSMP was represented by Jackie Sack and Ann McCoy at the 29th Annual Meeting of PME-NA, the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education. The meeting was held at Lake Tahoe, Nevada from October 25 to 28. See their presentation and the supporting paper.
- We have created a Geocadabra user's group (hosted by Google) to facilitate communication among users of Geocadabra, an interactive software that encourages geometric exploration created by Ton Lecluse. RUSMP and MLI were fortunate to have visits from Mr. Lecluse in 2005 and 2007, and to have him present and share his softwared with us. The user's group is an online community created in order for those who are using or trying out Geocadabra to communicate with one another about cool things they've done, questions about how to do something, lessons that incorporate Geocadabra, or any other Geocadabra-related topic. If you haven't done so yet, download the software and activities, and then join the user's group!
- Our Fall classes have begun! RUSMP is offering the following academic-year courses this Fall:
Calculus for High School Teachers,
Algebra for Elementary Teachers,
Data Analysis, Probability and Statistics for Middle and High School Teachers, and
Topics in Algebra for Algebra 1 Teachers.
- This year's Fall Networking Conference was one of the most successful ever. We are grateful to Paul Goldenberg for grabbing our attention with his presentation From Buttons to Algebra: Learning the Ideas and Language of Algebra, K-12, and to Harcourt School Publishers for their generosity in underwriting both breakfast and lunch.
- Dr. Anne Papakonstantinou and Richard Parr were featured speakers at the Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching in San Antonio, Texas on June 30, 2007. Anne’s presentation was entitled Investigating Functional Inverses from the Concrete to the Symbolic and Richard presented Using Multiple Representations to Enhance Instruction of Sequences and Series.
- The 21st annual Summer Campus Program concluded June 28, 2007. The colloquium schedule and photo album are available. Join us for the 2008 Summer Campus Program.
