Ergodicity of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms
The geodesic flow of a surface of negative curvature was one of the early examples of an ergodic dynamical system. The proof of this, given by
Eberhard Hopf in 1939, has been generalized several times in the intervening decades. These generalizations have required major advances in the theory of hyperbolic dynamics. The talk will give a necessarily brief survey of these developments and present the latest link in this chain of ideas.
