About

I am a (Full) Teaching Professor of Mathematics at Rice University, where I have been a faculty member since 2015. I received my PhD in mathematics from the University of Chicago under the supervision of Benson Farb. Previously, I have had positions at Haverford College, Bucknell University, Harvard University, and MIT. My primary interests are in undergraduate math education. I enjoy developing flipped/blended classes, particularly using in-class activities to get students to explore and discover mathematics on their own, in courses ranging from calculus to linear algebra to topology. I am happy to share or present on methods and results! People sometimes confuse me with:

  • Stephen Wong, a lecturer in Rice's Computer Science department

  • Stephen T. Wong, who is a bioengineering researcher at Houston Methodist and former adjunct faculty at Rice

  • Steve C. Wang, who also earned his PhD at Chicago and now studies statistics and paleobiology at Swarthmore College.

If you are on the Math undergraduate mailing list, you will get announcements of the applications for these positions. * Organizer of the Undergraduate Math Colloquium. * Faculty sponsor for both of Rice's ultimate frisbee teams, Torque (women) and Cloud Nine (men). Torque won back-to-back Division III national championships in 2014 and 2015!
