Stephen Wang

I am an Associate Teaching Professor in the Mathematics Department of Rice University. I received my PhD in mathematics from the University of Chicago under the supervision of Benson Farb. I have previously held positions at Haverford College, Bucknell University, Harvard University, and MIT.

Please do not confuse me with Stephen Wong, who is in the Rice Computer Science Department. Or Stephen T.C. Wong, who is a bioengineering researcher at Houston Methodist and adjunct faculty at Rice. Or Steve C. Wang, who also earned his PhD at Chicago and now studies statistics and paleobiology at Swarthmore College. Or...

Various hats of mine:

Calculus Coordinator for the Mathematics Department. If you would like to be a grader, please contact Ligia Leismer.

Faculty Associate at Duncan College.

Faculty sponsor for Torque, the Rice women's ultimate (Frisbee) team (D-3 national champions in both 2014 and 2015, national runners-up in 2016!).

This section of Math 101 was run in an experimental manner - it was flipped, using online modules that engaged students and encouraged them to actively think through the material. I gave a short talk about it at the 2016 Joint Math Meetings. 0:00 - 3:04 gives the philosophical rationale for the course structure; 3:04 - 10:50 has a description of the course; 10:50 - 16:40 presents the preliminary results.
Update: Survey results from the Spring 2016 iteration of the experimental section.
